Thomas Layton was a Judge in New York City. He was a mentor to future State Senator Maureen Pagolis, as he was the first judge she worked for. She regarded him as an inspiration to her career in public service. He was killed during a reenactment of the Burr-Hamilton duel by a bullet meant for his fellow participant George Pagolis, Maureen's husband. Unknown to the killer, Pagolis and Layton had switched their roles without anyone's knowledge. The killer wanted to shoot the man playing Hamilton, which due to the switch was the Judge.
