Within the west-central area of the township is the village of Carleton. The population was 7,610 during the 2000 census. Bisecting the township is Interstate 275; additionally, U.S. Highway 24 (locally known as Telegraph Road) traverses from the southern boundary northeastward, connecting Monroe and Flat Rock.

The community uses five ZIP codes; although, the majority of the population lives within 48117—assigned to Carleton. Much of the land east of Telegraph Road (U.S. Highway 24) uses ZIP code 48179—assigned to South Rockwood.
