  • Oeneus sent Meleager to gather up heroes from all over Greece to hunt the Calydonian Boar that had been terrorizing the area, rooting up the vines, Oeneus having omitted Artemis at a festival in which he honored the other gods. In addition to the heroes he required, he chose Atalanta, a fierce huntress, whom he loved. According to one account of the hunt, when Hylaeus and Rhaecus, two centaurs, tried to rape Atalanta, Meleager killed them. Then, Atalanta wounded the boar and Meleager killed it. He awarded her the hide since she had drawn the first drop of blood. Meleager's brother Toxeus, the "archer", and Plexippus (Althaea's brother) grew enraged that the prize was given to a woman. Meleager killed them in the following argument. He also killed Iphicles and Eurypylus for insulting Atalanta. When Althaea found out that Meleager had killed her brother and one of her sons, Althaea placed the brand that she had stolen from the Fates (the one that the Fates predicted, once engulfed with fire, would kill Meleager) upon the fire, thus fulfilling the prophecy and killing Meleager. The women who mourned his death were turned into guineafowl (Meleagrides). Meleager is also mentioned as one of the Argonauts. In Hades, his is the only shade that does not flee Heracles, who has come after Cerberus. In Bacchylides' Ode V, Meleager is still in his shining armor, so formidable, in Bacchylides' account, that Heracles reaches for his bow to defend himself. Heracles is moved to tears by Meleager's account; Meleager has left his sister Deianira unwedded in his father's house, and entreats Heracles to take her as bride; here Bacchylides breaks off his account of the meeting, without noting that in this way Heracles in the Underworld chooses a disastrous wife. With his wife Kleopatra, daughter of Idas and Marpessa, he had a daughter, Polydora, who became the bride of Protesilaus, who left her bed on their wedding-night to join the expedition to Troy. Among the Romans, the heroes assembled by Meleager for the Calydonian hunt provided a theme of multiple nudes in striking action, to be portrayed frieze-like on sarcophagi. Meleager's story has similarities with the Scandinavian Norna-Gests þáttr.

  • Meleager the Mighty was a recurring character on Xena: Warrior Princess. He was a famed hero of Greece, most notable for defeating 317 men at the battle of Liguria. While he was a fearless champion, he was also a constant drunk. Drink seemed to come before his work, and this has resulted in mishaps due to drink. When Gabrielle was at the Athens Academy, he inadvertantly met Xena whilst drunk and hiding in a stable block. She had killed a man that tried to attack her, but the man fell into the path of Meleager who ended up taking the blame for the murder when a witness to the scene reported what she saw. When the warlord Damon began ransacking towns and sent word that he was heading for Potedia, they hired Meleager to defend the village. Gabrielle showed up at this point, who helped Lila keep Meleager in shape and away from alcohol. After he was shown his cash payment, he took the money and used it to buy weapons and defeat Damon. After saving Potedia and ending Damon's reign, he vowed to stay away from drink from then on. His past incident with Xena returned to haunt him, after he was caught by the authorities, and, under the orders of Judge Arbus (who had a reputation of "being a fair and just man"), he was sentenced to death for murder. Although Xena did not at first remember the night that she had killed the man herself, she did recollect the situation when she saw the unique sword that was used to kill him - a medium sized blade, with a skull and crossbones on its hilt. After investigating some more, she realized that Arbus' reputed ways of fairness were lies, building his career on a case in which he executed an accused man when he knew he was innocent. Xena saved Meleager from his execution and explained the true events of that night. After threatening to expose Arbus to the town, he pardoned Meleager and they were let off the hook.

He was reportedly wiped out whole villages of native syrians for a minor event. Some have come to, quite intelligently, question his sanity, of course never to his face. Occupation: Satrap of Edessa Weapons: Kopis Armour: Bronze Muscled Cuirass Clothing: A long dark red cloak History: Born in Thessalia into a poor family, his upbringing was very harsh and struggle to just survive. They were able to scratch out a living, however precarious it was. His father, in an attempt to get a better life, he joined Alexander's army. He was the first man to be killed by the persians, the first victim of the first persian arrow. Not that Meleager found that out, it he did he might die from the shame. But when the war was over, and Alexander had conquered to the ends of the earth, the fact his father had been in the army was what matter. His son and wife were offered positions in the east, prominent positions. They eagerly accepted, and could wait to get out of their pathetic life. A day or two before they were set to leave, Meleager was in a bar. Some of the locals who had fought with Alexander and lived had returned home and were drinking. One of them, drunk to the point of not knowing better, informed Meleager of his father ignoble fate before his friends could stop him. A few hours before they set sail, Meleager left his wife and mother on the ship with the other immigrants, saying he had forgotten one thing. He promised he would make it back before the ship left for Asia. He had indeed forgotten something, but not what he told them. He looked up at the house of the man from the bar. Taking his new kopis out of it's guard, he slowly entered the house. He found the man, in bed with a young girl. As the man's attention was on something else, he came up behind him. As the girl screamed out, he turned around to see Meleager. He hit the man in the face with the pommel, then again and again. It was soon a bloody mess. Now using the business end of the weapon, he began to cut into and mutilate the body. Panting, he looked down at bloody pulp in front of him. He put away his sword, took off his clothes and took some new ones from the closet. He turned over, and looking at the girl as if it was the first time he saw her. She had stopped screaming a while ago. What of her he could see under the blood was pale white. He simply walked out, washed his arms, legs, and face clean, and left. For a while, he lived in Seleucia as solider in the Seleucid Army. Due to his homeland of Thessalia he was naturally placed in the Hetairoi corps, where he excelled. When Seleucus recently reformed the old city of Odessa into a military colony and capital of Assyria, Meleager joined a number of already eastern greeks and new mainlanders in settling there. Due to his experience the army, he was able to rise to be Satrap of the border satrapy. A strong, military minded man was needed here, due to the large number of army units stationed there, and threat of the Ptolemaics and Antigonids so close.
