Starting 20th in the field of fifty, O'Dell was involved with an early crash and wound up with a poor 39th place finish. O'Dell then returned to action in Speedweeks 1961, competing at Daytona. Starting 9th in the Daytona 500 qualifier race (then a points race), O'Dell fell two laps down but his 10th place finish was his best career finish and enough to propel him into the Daytona 500. Speaking of the big event, O'Dell only lasted ten laps before bearing woes left him 54th.
