  • Kurdish insurgency group. The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has been fighting a guerrilla campaign against the Turkish government since the 1970's. Their goal is to establish an independent Kurdish state is southeast Turkey and northern Iraq. The group has primarily focused on hit and run raids on military targets, although they have also been tied to kidnappings and bombings directed at both tourists and the police. The PKK suspended most operations in 1998 following the arrest and trial of its main leader, Abdullah Ocalan. Recent talks between the Turkish government and remaining PKK leadership have raised the possibility of a negotiated settlement that would end the 30-year-old conflict.
