| - These are the class notes for Sentiology 501: Twi'leks. Here, members of the Sentient Studies Department can leave notes on their research so that we can all draw from one another's findings when crafting the final piece to appear in the encyclopedia. Please note the following recommendations on methodology and research technique: 1.
* Begin with previous encyclopedic efforts to describe the Twi'lek species. Works in this category include, but are not limited to, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, Ultimate Alien Anthology, The New Essential Guide to Alien Species, and their ilk. These sources will provide the basic framework from which a good, if not great, alien species article can be written. Stand on the shoulders of giants, as our colleagues always say, and when so many of our colleagues have four arms… Well, you get the picture. 2.
* Place your notes under the appropriate section headings below. For example, if you are noting that the Twi'leks have several possible skin colors, this information should be placed under the heading "Biology and appearance". However, if there are social implications of each skin tone, place this information under "Society and culture." The fact that many Human males seem to lose all sense of control in the presence of Twi'lek females might warrant notation under both "Biology and appearance" and "Twi'leks in the galaxy," (if not "Society and Culture"). 3.
* Separate each note with a bullet point (achieved by typing * before the information. We differ from the Chandrillan Guide to Style on this point. 4.
* Remember to pay attention to visual depictions of our specimens as well as what has been written about them. Some information has only been conveyed in visual form. Be sure to tell your significant other this when reading about Aayla Secura. 5.
* After each note, please include some indication of what source it was drawn from. You can do this with a simple parenthetical abbreviation and a page number. So, for example, p. 32 of The Star Wars Sourcebook might be indicated by the notation (SWSB 32) after the information drawn from that page. For works with no page numbers (such as television episodes or some comic books), page numbers are not necessary. For novels (which exist in several different formats with different pagination), a chapter designation suffices. 6.
* If a particular piece of information has already been noted from a previously consulted source, do not hesitate to indicate that it appears in the source you have consulted as well. For example, if your colleague has already noted under "History" that the Twi'leks were subjected to galactic slavery, sourced to, say, "(SWE 233)", please expand that notation to include your source as well (e.g., "SWE 233, CSWE II 330)". We will decide on how best to source such information for the final article when we move on to the drafting stage. 7.
* Note quotes by and about the species under the "Quotes" section below. Although this will not be a part of the final article, it will be a good place from which to draw quotes when we work on the final piece. 8.
* Once you have exhausted a source, cross it off the list below so others know that there is no need to consult it again. 9.
* Before striking a source from the list, make sure that the whole source has been exhaustively scanned. When reading sourcebooks with sections about individual alien species, look for examples of the guy you are researching also in the sections about other species. The Gran are probably mentioned in the section about Dugs. 10.
* Be sure to take frequent breaks, take a walk, get some suns-shine and fresh sporulated air. Carpal Tynnan Syndrome is sometimes called "the academic's disease" with good reason.
