Lutz's debut came in 1956, when he competed at Martinsville. Starting 10th in the large forty-car field, Lutz didn't last but sixty-three laps before an engine issue left him 39th. Lutz's next race would come in 1957, competing at Daytona Beach Road Course. Starting 27th in the large field of fifty-seven car field in a Petty Enterprises Oldsmobile, Lutz used his Petty chance and drove to a solid 6th place finish.

But Lutz still managed to transfer over to the Daytona 500, starting 58th and finishing 53rd after engine issues.
