Christendom, or the Christian world, has several meanings. In a cultural sense it refers to the worldwide community of Christians, adherents of Christianity. This community numbers in the billions of people of the world population, and is spread across many different nations and ethnic groups connected only by faith in Christ and observance of the Bible. In a historical or geopolitical sense the term usually refers collectively to Christian majority countries or countries in which Christianity dominates or was a territorial phenomenon.

In de loop der tijd zijn binnen het christendom een westerse en een oosterse traditie ontstaan. Tot de westerse traditie behoren het rooms-katholicisme en het daaruit ontstane protestantisme. Tot de oosterse traditie behoren enerzijds de oriëntaals-orthodoxe kerken die afstand namen van het Concilie van Chalcedon (451), de oosters-orthodoxe kerken, die ontstaan zijn na het schisma van 1054 en die theologisch nauwelijks afwijken van het rooms-katholicisme en de oosters-katholieke kerken, die geünieerd zijn met Rome. Al deze tradities onderschrijven de canones van het Concilie van Nicea.
