Her mother, Maya Lewis, was a professor at The George Washington University. She died in a plane crash when Olivia was twelve years old. Growing up, Olivia attended several elite boarding schools. After graduating from high school, she went on to the United States Naval Academy. Olivia graduated from the Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy. While at the Academy, she decided to become a public affairs officer. Soon after receiving her commission as an Ensign, Olivia attended the Public Affairs Officer Qualification Course at the Defense Information School. Afterwards, she was assigned as the assistant public affairs officer to the USS Carl Vinson. Olivia was later assigned to the Public Affairs Office at Naval Base Coronado. She left the Navy after five years of service and obtained a position as an account associate at a Washington, D.C.-based public relations firm specializing in crisis management. Just a year later, Olivia left the firm and then enrolled in the Georgetown University Law Center. Soon after earning her Juris Doctor, she was hired as a senior associate by a Sacramento-based public relations and affairs firm specializing in political consulting. At the firm, Olivia became acquainted with fellow associate Cyrus Beene, a former professional political advisor. Cyrus later left the firm to join the presidential campaign of California governor Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III as the campaign manager. Sometime later, Cyrus brought Olivia on to the campaign to manage image problems for Grant. The first encounter between Grant and Olivia did not go well, with Olivia giving brutally honest critiques and Grant arguing to have her fired immediately. But after some time, and learning to trust Olivia's gut, he realized that she is incredibly smart and great at her job. Fitzgerald Grant was eventually elected President of the United States. After he was sworn in, Olivia became the Assistant to the President for Communications. She later resigned from her position as White House Communications Director and started her own company, Olivia Pope and Associates. Though often mistaken for a law firm, Olivia Pope and Associates is a full-service firm that provides crisis management, strategic communications, public affairs, and public relations counsel to clients in the District of Columbia.
