Originating with Awa, the legendary Force Hound who led the Kandawans in antiquity, the title of Kandar was linked to the very roots of Kandawan culture and traditionaly functioned as both the head-of-state as well as a spiritual guide for the Kandawans; while it was not typical, it was also possible for a Kandar to hold the position of supreme commander if they chose. • Originating with Awa, the legendary Force Hound who led the Kandawans in antiquity, the title of Kandar was linked to the very roots of Kandawan culture and traditionaly functioned as both the head-of-state as well as a spiritual guide for the Kandawans; while it was not typical, it was also possible for a Kandar to hold the position of supreme commander if they chose. Few people were considered worthy of becoming Kandar and those who were, marked by their abnormally high connections to the Force, were identified by shamans at birth. Upon turning fourteen, the age in which Awa was said to have been when she defected from the Infinite Empire, the worthy would be sent to the Summer Spire to begin years of study and training to prepare them for their possible ascension. When the time came, these candidates took part in the Spirit Rite -- a ritual in which the result dictated who would become the new Kandar; those who studied at the Spire but were not chosen to be Kandar often served as Sages or Arbiters, traveling the Freehold in the Kandar's name to spread wisdom and justice to its people. While they served in their capacity for life, a Kandar had the ability to step down and pass on the title to an heir or, if they are proven to be unworthy, could have the title forcibly revoked by the Council of Nations. Although not hereditary, it was not unheard of for the title to remain within a singular family for several generations, as it had with the House of Y'shan.
