The Mitsubishi A14S is a carrier-based VTOL fighter in use by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, being the primary Japanese navy jet since 1987, when it was introduced. The A14S was regarded as the most advanced naval fighter in the world upon its production and helped cement Japan as the preeminent west Pacific naval power. The A14S saw extensive service during the Philippine War, when it conducted missions along with multirole fighters from the Air Force and as escort for bombers striking rebel targets. The A14S's succesor, the A16M, is slated to be introduced in 2014, after which the A14S will be gradually phased out.
