- Marines are naval infantry. Their responsibilities include maintaining discipline on the ship, by providing guards at key points, like the captain's cabin or magazines, boarding other ships and providing a military unit for shore operations. They were not involved in sailing the ships or manning their cannon, and often had a tense relationship with the seamen on the ship. They had an independent, army based, officer structure to the naval officers, reporting directly to the captain.

In Verrückt, a small strike team of four sent to extract the OSS Operative Peter McCain. They are Tank Dempsey, John Banana, Smokey, and a fourth, unnamed marine. Tank Dempsey survives the onslaught at the Asylum, but is captured by the Nazis and becomes the replace test subject for an unknown Mexican who had died. The test was on Superhumans powered by Element 115 or Divinum.
- The marine corps were infantry forces invented by Emperor Kellanved and unique to the Malazan Empire. In the Malazan Military, they were the most versatile combat forces, called in to fight in many different situations. With the addition of sappers, they often acted as shock troops, first to assault enemy positions; as skirmishers, screening heavy and medium infantry's advance; or sometimes taking part in covert and sabotage operations.
