The Title III Intercept arise from Title III of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, which provided for the use of court-ordered electronic surveillance in the investigation of certain specified criminal violations. The law provided that wiretaps could be used in emergency situations, but if a warrant was not obtained within 48 hours then any information obtained could not be used in court or even revealed.
