This diagnosis is not used when the mood disorder continues well after (about a month) the drug or medication use has stopped. This diagnosis is not used when the mood disorder is only found during delirium. To meet clinical standards these symptoms also must cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
