In 1862, Josiah Davies, a wealthy factory owner from Britain, is suddenly encaptivated by a new, bold, risky idea, partly inspired by the science-fiction tales of his time: sailing an "iron ship" to the Moon, further that anyone on Earth had ever travelled before. This will drive him for the next two years, as he experiments with devices he could never even have conceived of in OTL, until finally, on 12th September 1864, the HMVC Adventurer settles on the Moon's surface. Though at first doubted and mocked for the pure incredulity of his claims, he is sponsored publicly for a second, larger expedition. Soon, other nations will start to develop their own "vacuum carriages", and the history of not only Earth, but also of the Solar System, will be changed forever.
