Bruce studied French and Italian at Hertford College, Oxford, during which period she was a punk, and for one week had blue hair. In a programme she presented for the BBC on Leonardo Da Vinci on 30 October 2011 she demonstrated that she was comfortable interviewing both French and Italian art experts in their own languages.

TV and film credits include roles in Connected, Scot Free, Grange Hill, The Ward, Emmerdale, Prime Suspect 3, Heartbeat, The Royal, Last of the Summer Wine, Strange and Taggart, whilst on stage she has appeared in productions which include Oliver Twist, Casualties, Mother Courage, The Waltz, Threepenny Opera, The Mayor of Casterbridge and Playing for Time. Fiona has also worked on a huge variety of voice-over projects, including computer games, Spanish and French language tutorials and interactive training projects, and has also worked on projects for BBC Radio 4 and Swedish Radio.
