World Championship Soccer is a soccer game running on Sega's Mega-Tech arcade cabinet system and was released as one of the first games for the Sega Genesis system in North America in September 1989. The European release, World Cup Italia '90, was published jointly with Olivetti and Virgin Mastertronic and was an officially licensed franchise game of the 1990 FIFA World Cup featuring the official logo and mascot. After the World Cup licence had expired the game was renamed to Sega Soccer on the Mega 6 compilation cartridge on the Mega Drive removing the Virgin Mastertronic credit.

In 1990, Sega released a version for the Master System and it was ported by [lite Systems for DOS, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum.

El juego no aporta un nuevo concepto en jugabilidad, ya que como muchos juegos de la época, está basado en el Tekhan World Cup Soccer (que más tarde fué adaptado a los sistemas de 8 bits como Tecmo World Cup Soccer), con una vista cenital, y controles sencillos. El aspecto gráfico es ligeramente diferente, pero muy similar al juego anteriormente nombrado. No obstante, este juego se convirtió en un clásico para los usuarios de Sega Megadrive/Genesis. La secuela de este juego, el World Championship Soccer II, por el contrario, ofreció un aspecto gráfico y jugabilidad renovados.
