Phanlax is the Elder God of Death, and a big rival of Dragnas, the Elder God of Fire. Phanlax was a succesfull god, whom was mislead by the Empty Lord, Zaros, whom was possibly an Elder God too. The Symbol of Phanlax resembles the symbol on a death rune, a skull and two bones.The fact that two of the known Elder Gods have a rune symbol as their personal symbol, may be important to notice. It is possible that each Elder God (except Jas) has it's own rune. This is however very unlikely, and still a theory.

As we know Zaros' symbol, there are even more theories: not all the Elder Gods have their own rune, like Jas is, or maybe there will come two new runes, one with Zaros' symbol, and one with Jas' symbol. This is however very unlikely, and still a theory. Phanlax makes his first appearance in the Song of Saradomin, tricking the adventurer in regaining his armour. He also disguises himself as Panthes, a retired wizard, Panthix, a druid and his brother, and even Saradomin, to trick the adventurer into helping him. At the end of the quest, he reveals himself to be Phanlax, and completes his set of armour after stealing his staff from Dragnas, and soon after teleports away. The Song of Saradomin seems to be a curse, that stuns it's hearer (except the caster) and can even drain the hearer's energy.
