Though not strong on their own, multiple bursts focused at one will eventually destroy whatever was being targeted. In most combat situations, the Laser battery is generally effective in providing air support and point defense. There are limits to how many enemy forces can be targeted at once. In cases like the Zerg, the batteries will eventually be overwhelmed with enough flyers swarming a single vessel. To compensate, it is generally recommended that the vessel be escorted by more specialized units such as tac fighters.
