| - The Imperial Security Bureau, or the ISB, was the domestic security service of the Galactic Empire, formed from the Internal Security Bureau of the Galactic Republic in 19 BBY. A division of the ISB ended up becoming an independent agency, the Internal Safeguard Division. Not only did the ISB oversee the internal security of the Empire, it also carried out it's own intelligence operations, being rivals of the smaller Imperial Intelligence.

- The Imperial Security Bureau, also simply called Imperial Security or the ISB, is a law enforcement and internal intelligence organization of the Galactic Empire. Based in the massive ISB Central Office on Coruscant, it is separate from, larger than, and often a rival to Imperial Intelligence. Many within the Imperial Military infrastructure tend to believe that the ISB had been established by Palpatine himself, as a way to exert a measure of control over the regular military, thereby ensuring that none of its leaders could grow strong enough to challenge him for control of the Empire. In reality, it was formed by Crueya Vandron to keep an eye on Imperial Intelligence and to ensure that the New Order's ideals would be carried out.

In the wake of the New Order, several intelligence organisations struggled for supremacy; Imperial Intelligence, the Imperial Security Bureau and COMPNOR each desired the mantle of Imperial secret police and fought viciously for it. The resulting war of shadows was nothing but a detriment to the Empire, eroding faith in the intelligence services, wasting tremendous resources and crippling operations.
- First formed in the months before the Clone Wars as a reorganization of Republic intelligence agencies, ISB, then under name of the Republic Security Bureau (RSB), was the brainchild of Armand Isard, who pawned it to Buck Rogers before going off to create Imperial Intelligence. Its purpose was the same as that of Republic Intelligence: to consolidate the existing collection of departmental acronyms into one, thus ending quarrels between rival departments over seating arrangements at public functions. Among those united were BBC, LSD, IHOP, FUBAR, and KFC. As implied, some acronymic organizations avoided absorption: Republic Intelligence (RI) survived to become Imperial Intelligence (II), as did the Republic Anti Civil Liberties Union (RACLU), which became the IACLU.
