He played junior hockey for the Shawinigan Bruins of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, scoring 91 points in his final season, 1971-72. The Pittsburgh Penguins chose him 120th overall in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. However, Bergeron elected to sign with the Quebec Nordiques of the World Hockey Association. He scored 33 points with them in 1972-73. The next season he played with the Maine Nordiques. After sitting out for a season, he became the player-coach of the intermediate Bathurst Alpines in New Brunswick in 1978. He retired in 1985.
