The ECAC Tournament has been held at the conclusion of the ECAC regular season since the league's inception. From 1962 to 1989, 8 teams qualified for the tournament. This was a more difficult task in the earlier years, when the league had as many as 29 teams at one point, and prior to the Hockey East split in 1984, had 17 teams. Despite the decrease in teams from 17 to 12, 10 teams qualified for the tournament from 1990 to 2002. In 2002, the tournament was expanded so that all teams qualify regardless of regular season ranking.

In 2002, the tournament was expanded so that all teams qualify regardless of regular season ranking. Since the beginning, early round games have been played in the home rinks of the higher seed. From 1962 to 1997, the semifinal and final rounds, known as the ECAC Final Four or ECAC Championships were held on neutral ground. From 1998 to 2002, this was expanded to five teams. With the change in the tournament structure in 2003, the neutral single-elimination round games were returned to a four-team format. From 1962 to 1966, the ECAC Championships took place at Boston Arena in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1967 they moved to the Boston Garden and were played there until 1992, when the 1980 Olympic Arena in Lake Placid, New York became the venue. Finally, in 2003, the tournament was moved to Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York where it remains today. The winner of the ECAC Tournament is awarded the Whitelaw Cup and is given an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
