The Dampener was a type of space station created by the rogue Vulcan scientist T'Uerell. These stations contained a large ring shaped construct by their side and were composed of solid Neutronium making them almost impenetrable. In 2272, T'Uerell deployed a number of these stations around the Kettaract research station and were used to destroyed a Federation Starfleet taskforce by weakening their shields with the resulting power being transmitted into the defense grid which destroyed the intruding starships.

Kirk led another taskforce which was commanded from the USS Enterprise that scanned the carrier signal used by the dampener in order to cause an overload in the stations leaving them powerless.
