Archaeological evidence indicates that indigenous Australians had crossed the Blue Mountains many thousands of years prior to European settlement. The first European to cross the Blue Mountains might possibly have been John Wilson, a former convict. In 1797 he returned to Sydney after exploring for five years and claimed to have travelled beyond the mountains. His reports about the region are generally accurate which lends support to the claim he was the first.
