In 2008, Sylvester McCoy suggested that Sachs would make the best replacement for David Tennant, soon to leave the role of the Tenth Doctor. Following the departure of Colin Baker from the role, Sachs had auditioned for the role of the Seventh Doctor in 1987, but McCoy was cast instead.

His mother a librarian and Jewish father an insurance broker, the family fled to England in 1938 to escape the Nazis and settled in north London. He was in the acting profession since the late 1950s - initially working on radio productions - and made his screen debut in the TV series Dial 999 in 1959. On Coronation Street he played Ramsay Clegg - the half-brother of Norris Cole - between May and August 2009. He was later heard more frequently as a narrator of documentaries and audio books before he was diagnosed with dementia in 2012.
