The M88 Compression Launcher, colloquially referred to as a grappling gun, is a handheld compressed-air launcher designed and produced by Acheron Security for the UNSC Engineering Corps. Although intended to help combat engineers assault or tear down enemy fortifications, the strength of its incorporated winch allows it to anchor and lift nearly 600 pounds, enough to carry two to three people or even a fully-armored SPARTAN, leading it to be used by a number of special forces personnel to rapidly scale impressive heights. The launcher can be fitted with a variety of different hooks and ropes, including high tensile strength steel cables for climbing, or tripwired grenades which can be launched to an obstacle, and triggered with a pull of the rope.
