"I Can't Let Go" is The Hollies' first 1966 single, and the final single to feature the band's original bassist Eric Haydock. It went to No.2 in the UK but only No.42 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. The song was co-written by Chip Taylor, who also wrote "Wild Thing" and is actor Jon Voight's brother. The song was a cover of blue-eyed soul songstress Evie Sands's version on George Goldner's Blue Cat label, which was locally popular in the US [NYC] in 1965. The Hollies' version got an enthusiastic thumbs up from Paul McCartney, who thought Graham Nash's soaring tenor during the chorus was a trumpet.

"I Can't Let Go" was the last Hollies recording to feature original bass player Eric Haydock. He was replaced by Bernie Calvert who would play on the band's next single, "Bus Stop". Linda Ronstadt released a successful version in 1980, from her Platinum-certified album Mad Love. The disc's third single, it reached No.31 on the Billboard Hot 100. Les Fradkin has a very close cover version on his 2006 release, Goin' Back.
