The Town of Rayside-Balfour was formed in 1973 through the creation of the Regional Municipality of Sudbury, amalgamating the Townships of Rayside and Balfour. Each township had a separate fire department, namely the Rayside Township Fire Department and Balfour Township Fire Department. In 2001, the Rayside-Balfour Fire Department was amalgamated with other area departments to form the City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services upon the creation of Greater Sudbury.
