| - During the independence movement in East Timor, the United States increased its efforts to establish East Timor as a sovereign and democratic state, with many of its efforts being directed from the Embassy situated in the capital city of Dili. During the events of 2006 Douglas Shetland, CEO of Displace International, was stationed at the Embassy trying to uncover evidence of Indonesian terrorist activities in the region. CIA Agent Ingrid Karlthson was also stationed here, posing as a desk jockey during her investigation of the worsening situation in the country. On 28 March 2006, the Darah Dan Doa, an American trained, Indonesian guerrilla organization led by Suhadi Sadono, led a major assault on the U.S. Embassy as a statement against the American presence in East Timor. After attacking the Embassy with a suicide truck bombing, Sadono and his men stormed the flaming Embassy and immediately took people hostage, including Douglas Shetland and Ingrid Karlthson. During the siege, Sadono personally executed several hostages, whom he felt knew more than they should have about his campaign against the United States. Upon learning of the hostage crisis and the intelligence Shetland possessed, Third Echelon deployed Sam Fisher to recover the data before Sadono did. In the hour following Sam's escape, Delta Force arrived and liberated the Embassy from its captors, rescuing the surviving hostages, including Douglas. Unfortunately, Sadono had escaped and Ingrid Karlthson vanished. The attack on the Embassy prompted a massive buildup of American forces stationed in East Timor in an effort to quell Indonesian efforts to retake the country.
