Real Kritosaurus were medium-sized North American hadrosaurs. The first remains of this dinosaur were found in the United States in 1904 by the famous American paleontologist Barnum Brown. The only known material of this dinosaur consists of its skull. For a long time Kritosaurus was thought to be the same dinosaur as the closely related Gryposaurus, although this is no longer the case. However, little is known about this species. It lived during the Late Cretaceous at 73 million years ago. Like all hadrosaurs, it could chew its food using rows of small, tightly packed teeth. Its name means "separated lizard".

  • Kritosaurus (meaning "separated lizard"; sometimes misinterpreted as "noble lizard", in reference to the presumed "Roman nose"; the nasal region was fragmented, disarticulated, and originally restored flat) is an incompletely known but historically important genus of duckbilled dinosaur. It lived about 73 million years ago, in the Late Cretaceous of North and possibly South America. Its taxonomic history is confusing, also incorporating Gryposaurus, Anasazisaurus, and Naashoibitosaurus; this tangle will remain unresolved until better remains of Kritosaurus are described. Despite the dearth of material, this herbivore appeared in dinosaur books until the 1990s, although what was usually represented was the much more completely known Gryposaurus, then thought to be a synonym.

The name means "separated lizard" (referring to the arrangement of the cheek bones in an incomplete type skull), but is often mistranslated as "noble lizard" in reference to the presumed "Roman nose" (in the original specimen, the nasal region was fragmented and disarticulated, and was originally restored flat).
