After the liberation of Belgium in 1944, large numbers of Fusilier Battalions () were mobilized for the Allied cause. In total, 57 separate battalions were mobilized between October 1944 and June 1945. About 20 of them saw active service during the final year of the war. From December 1944, the remaining fusilier battalions were formed into 16 "Fusilier Brigades".
