Wells' did not return to the sport for ten years, making a start at Birmingham in 1961. But it was a very good start for the driver, starting 10th and finishing a career-best 5th. That effort kept him in for three more races that year, though those could never match that Birmingham race. Two DNFs disallowed him from cracking the top-twenty but once more - an 18th place finish in his final career race at Nashville.
