He played junior hockey with the Toronto Canoe Club and the Toronto Aura Lee from 1923 to 1926. After playing senior hockey with the Toronto City Hall team in a local league in 1926-27, Foster signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers in 1927. After a dispute about his NHL rights was settled with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Foster was assigned to the Springfield Indians and played there for two seasons. The Rangers brought him up in 1929-30 but he was traded in mid-season to the Boston Bruins. The Bruins kept him on the Boston Cubs until 1931-32, when he played a full season for the NHL club. He went back to the minors in 1932-33 and was a player-coach for the Tulsa Oilers that year. He then signed as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings. He saw some limited action with the Red Wings in 1933-34 and 1934-35. After that he played entirely in the minors until his retirement in 1944. Foster made a one season comeback with the Detroit Metal Mouldings in 1946-47. In the NHL, Foster played in 83 games and scored 3 goals and 2 assists.
