Quando Adamo le si fece vicino e le chiese di conoscersi in senso biblico (che allora era l’unico senso conosciuto), e le rivolse il fin troppo noto quesito: “Mela dai?”, lei declinò le sue profferte glissando con un elegante “Ti è piaciuta la mela? Ed adesso magnt ‘o limon”. Giusto per evidenziare quanto quello fosse il frutto a nessuno proibito. Un noto favolista raccontava invece di una volpe che, essendo l’uva troppo acerba per lei, preferì optare per il fresco frutto giallo. Beninteso: ben maturo. Così come Eugenio Montale, che scrisse una poesia intitolata I Limoni per sottolineare la sensazione pungente di quei poeti che non riuscivano a inserire nelle loro composizioni parole come “acanti”, “bosso”, “efferato” e “tracotante”, per non parlare di “estemporaneo” e “sinonimico”. Anche il Vangelo racconta di una donna che era stata sorpresa con le mani nella marmellata (di limoni), e che in occasione del Mela Day aveva fatto mangiare il limone al proprio consorte limonando (da ciò il termine) con qualcun altro. Accusata, era stata condannata da un tribunale di vecchi uomini alla lapidazione, ma Gesù l’aveva assolta con sei semplici parole: “Chi di voi è senza peccato, mangi il primo limone”. Dissuasi dal sapore amaro del frutto, gli anziani avevano deciso di liberare la donna, lasciandola limonare con chi e dove le piacesse.
