SMS G96, as the last of the batch of boats ordered at the outbreak of the war, was supposed to be the prototype for an improved version of the GTB 1913. The forecastle was lengthened and the bridge set back to improve its seagoing capabilities, but hindering the two bow-mounted torpedo tubes from firing straight ahead. However, events overtook the planning, and G96 remained the only one of its class to be built. She was built together with the preceding G85 class at the Germaniawerft shipyard in Kiel.
