The smurfominium was a structure built by Handy and Architect Smurf in the cartoon show episode "Skyscraper Smurfs". Architect was inspired with the creation of the smurfominium after watching a colony of ants return to their hole in a tree stump, impressed by how they manage to live together as a community within a compact space. At first the Smurfs couldn't see the point of living in such a place like the smurfominium, but after Architect explained about the comfort and conveniences that it can offer them, most if not all of the Smurfs were willing to move into the smurfominium. However, the Smurfs barely started to settle in when there were problems such as a lack of heat and no plumbing control. Architect and Handy were constantly on the run fixing one problem after another that cropped up with the Smurfs living in the smurfominium, that eventually Architect had accidentally caused the problem of setting the whole place on fire by not closing the furnace gate. Soon all the Smurfs were abandoning their apartments as the Smurf Village Fire Brigade hosed the smurfominium down, but Architect refused to abandon his creation until he had to rescue his friend Handy when the floor collapsed under him. After seeing the smurfominium being left in ruins, the Smurfs decided that living in the Smurf Village was better for them and so moved back into the village, with Brainy saying that smurfominium life is for the birds. By springtime, Brainy's words would be taken literally as Handy and Architect saw that birds have now made their nests in the ruins.
