The term matriarch referred to the last of three life-stages of the Sa'ari species. Beginning around six or seven hundred years of age, this stage was characterized by the desire to become leaders within the various levels of Sa'ari society. Matriarchs were revered for their long years of experience and wisdom, and often served as mentors to younger Sa'ari. Most planetary-level politicians on T'lessia were matriarchs. Eldarch Bellinega T'Ledra, leader of the Order of the Blue Light, was a matriarch when the "Starborne Ones" Laera Reyolé and Silas Dan'kre arrived on the Sa'ari homeworld.

Not all matriarchs felt the need to assume leadership roles, however. Some chose to remain as matrons, staying at home with their close families, while others continued in active service as police or military officers, which were hallmarks of the maiden stage.
