Otis made appearances on various WATL 36 shows with Ludlow Porch, performing the Georgia Bulldogs Larry Munson, Don Kennedy and Entertainment Page host Artie Goodman. As Otis, Whitmire interviewed Olivia Newton-John during a tour promoting an album.

Zaczynał w lokalnej telewizji w Atlancie, gdzie prezentował własny program z kukiełką nazwaną Otis. W 1978 dołączył do do ekipy The Muppet Show. Kierował początkowo głównie szczurem Rizzo, występował także we Fraglesach. W 1990 po śmierci Jima Hensona został wybrany na jego następcę do roli Kermita, a także Erniego z Ulicy Sezamkowej. Odtwarzał również m.in. Lipsa, Beakera i Statlera.

Then, when Jim Henson passed away in 1990, Whitmire was selected to take over the role of Kermit the Frog. Then, following Richard Hunt's death and Jerry Nelson's retirement, he also took over the roles of Beaker and Statler, respectively. His wife, Melissa Whitmire, has also puppeteered on occasion. He also took over Link Hogthrob and The Muppet Newsman years after Henson's death.

When Jim Henson passed away in 1990, Whitmire was selected to take over the roles of Kermit the Frog and Ernie. Following Richard Hunt's death and Jerry Nelson's retirement, he took over the roles of Beaker and Statler, respectively. His wife, Melissa Whitmire, has also puppeteered on occasion.
