| - The Day of Fire was the event immediately preceding the Silence, and was blamed for the Ancients no longer speaking to the people of Enroth. Before the Silence, the Ancients often spoke to the mortals, magic was freely available, and the Heavenly Forges created wonderful magical items and terrible weapons. Some bandits raided an Ancients' armory and took one of these weapons, but where stopped by the local authorities, and the weapon ended up in the hands of Alan, the mayor of Aliant. He held onto it for safekeeping. When his daughter Alanna was murdered in the middle of the night outside the council meeting hall, Alan swore vengeance on the murderer. A message came to Alan that accused his fellow council members of the crime, and he ordered the five elders put to death. One of them was caught and executed, but the rest escaped to the country of Vissias. Alan's forces pursued them, and when the armies of Vissias refused to turn them over, fighting broke out. Alan's son Michael was killed in the battle, and the grieving father activated the Ancient weapon. "The wrath of heaven poured out of the artifact, instantly slaying both armies to a man and filling the land with poison. Fire rained onto the town of Aliant, burned the green fields of Vissias, and wrought ruin for hundreds of miles around. Uninhabitable for centuries, the formerly lush lands of Vissias and Aliant became the vast desert known now as Dragonsand."—Bard Tanni When the Colonial Government pleaded with the Ancients for help, they received no answer. Without their guiding voice, most of the great magic stopped working and the Heavenly Forges began to break down. A new calendar was formed to mark this dark occasion, which is why the people of Enroth measured years in BS or AS, Before or After the Silence.
