abstract
  • Isabella Antonelli was an Italian woman who emigrated to the United States some time before the Great War. Her husband, a US soldier, was killed by Canadian forces in Quebec after purchasing a chicken from Lucien Galtier. Isabella lived in Boston, Massachusetts where she worked in a tuna-canning plant. Lonely and desperate, she was seduced by her foreman and became pregnant. She left the plant to live with the foreman but he abandoned her, and to support her daughter, Isabella was forced to work as a prostitute near Boston Harbor, selling herself to fishermen and U.S. Navy personnel, including Sam Carsten, and in her later years George Enos, Jr., though Enos was uninterested in taking her up on it.
