These bolts were extremely deadly, capable of killing a mortal instantly and able to severely wound demigods such as Hercules. When Hercules was wounded by such a bolt, it took him several days to recover from the wound, and the bolt almost killed him. Hercules stated that mortals are incapable of firing these bolts, though he may have meant that mortals cannot fire the crossbows that utilize them.
