Personally, he reminds me of the male character you can choose in Pokemon Leaf-green, fire-red versions. I think he's supposed to be the trainer from the original Red version, hence the "original" Pokemon trainer. Also, since his Charizard is his most evolved Pokemon, reason dictates that he has had it the longest, another sign that points to red version pokemon trainer.
