Whitley's debut came in 1960, when he competed at his home track of Bowman-Gray Stadium. Starting 16th in the field of eighteen, Whitley also finished 16th following early overheating issues. Whitley's next start, which came during the 1961 season, was also at Bowman-Gray. It was another tough afternoon for the driver, starting 10th but sliding back to 20th in the twenty-three car field following an early crash. Whitley, though, finally found some success at Bowman-Gray during his lone 1962 start. Qualifying 13th in the field of twenty-four, Whitley fell a number of laps down but drove a respectable race and wound up with a career-best 12th place finish. Following that mini-success, Whitley stepped it up to a two-race schedule for the 1963 season. He started the year off at Bowman-Gray as usual, but crashed there on the first lap and finished last (19th). He fared no better in his first trip to Hickory, finishing last (26th) due to very early brake issues. Whitley's final six races would then come during the 1963 season, when he finished a career-high 96th in points. Still, it was mostly a miserable season for the driver. Five DNFs in the six starts dashed Whitley's chances of hitting it big, allowing the driver to crack the top-twenty just three times during the year. He was 21st at Bowman-Gray and 19th at Hickory to start the year. From there, Whitley ventured to new tracks, finishing 19th at Hillsboro, 40th (last) at Martinsville, 28th at North Wilkesboro, and ultimately a season-best 17th place finish at Harris in his final career start.
