McChrystal was born in the Panama Canal Zone where his father, Herbert J. McChrystal Sr. was stationed with the United States military and Hazel Marion Vosper. He was married to the late Mary Gardner Bright and had 6 children. McChrystal graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1945 and was part of the Occupying force in Germany after World War II. He later served a tour of duty in Korea and two in Vietnam. He retired from the military in 1972 and went on to form a logistics consultation firm with his wife Nedra.
