Rand Paul was the son of Texan independence leader and prominent libertarian, Ron Paul. Rand, who believed Texas should remain a part of the United States, had a falling out with his father and they would never speak again until the elder Paul's death in 2020. Paul eventually took up the cause of Texan independence, believing that Texas had the right to self-determination.
