Johnson's debut came in 1956, when he competed at Rochester. It was a tough race for the driver, starting 7th but fading to 14th in the small field due to some spring issues. Johnson, though, recovered in remarkable fashion during his next race, competing at Busti in 1958. Starting 11th in the field of twenty-three, Johnson kept track with the readers all day and finished a solid third. Johnson's busiest year came in 1959, when he earned one top-ten after four starts. He also finished a career-high 57th in points. For the most part, though, Johnson struggled through the year. He DNFed twice in during the season, including finishing 43rd during the inaugural Daytona 500. But he also had two solid runs during the year, finishing 15th at Reading and 8th at Pittsburgh. Johnson also competed in a four race schedule during the 1960 season, a time in which Johnson found mixed results. Although Johnson failed to earn a top-ten, Johnson only DNFed just once during the year and earned three top-twenty runs (The only run outside of the top-twenty was a 27th in the Daytona 500). His best run of the year was a 16th at Montgomery. Johnson's final two races both came during the 1961 season, when he solely focused on Daytona's Speedweeks. He again transferred into the 500 via the Qualifier events, finishing 23rd. But in the Daytona 500, Johnson ended his career after finishing 58th with a broken head gasket.
