The Hugburtun was a cactus of semiarid to arid deserts, related to the prickly pear. It had large pink flowers which produced a reddish-purple fruit. When prepared by laceration and applied to a wound, this fruit immediately stopped all forms of bleeding. If ingested, the fruit was a circulatory poison.
