The main components of a photon torpedo consist of a photon/anti-deuterium reactive warhead placed into a Terminium-reinforced casing, commonly known as a photon tube. Before detonation, the matter/anti-matter charge is kept separated by an internal magno-plasma force field. Upon detonation, the field automatically deactivates, flooding the reaction chamber. This process allows thousands of magnetic micro-pockets of photons to combine with anti-matter. These micro-pockets help to control both blast radius and blast intensity.

  • A photon torpedo is the most powerful weapon in the froggy city arsenal. Offically declared a Weapon of mass destruction by froggy city, in defiance of the Pietopia Decleration.
  • The first photon torpedoes were successfully fired from the Moskva-class USS Gato (NCC-387) in 2214. (The Starfleet Museum: Museum Timeline) Starfleet used photon torpedo casings as coffins. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) In the 2370s, the Type-II was the standard photon torpedo used by Starfleet and had a yield of 18.5 isotons. The Type-IX was nearly as common as the type II but had a higher yield of 25 isotons. Some models, such as the advanced Type-VI could have a yield as high as 200 isotons. (Spacedock: The Advanced Starship and Construction Manual)
  • Starfleet vessels, operated by the United Federation of Planets, began using photon torpedoes by at least 2233. (Star Trek) The 24th century saw the deployment of an improved type of ordnance in the year 2371: the quantum torpedo. Nonetheless, photons continued to be utilized along with the new quantum torpedoes by such starships as the USS Enterprise-E. (DS9: "Defiant"; Star Trek Nemesis)
  • The photon torpedo was later refined so that the matter and antimatter packets were spread throughout the torpedo casing, with magnetic fields in place so that the two substances did not actually touch until the time of detonation. This refinement increased the yield of the torpedo, and was incorporated into Federation weapon systems. (TNG reference: Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual)
