| - The European Grand Prix is a Formula One World Championship event which was held between 1983 and 1985, 1993 to 1997, 1999 to 2012, and 2016. It was brought back to life at the Baku Street Circuit in Azerbaijan. The title, European Grand Prix, has also been given as an honorary designation at 24 World Championship Grands Prix and 10 pre-World Championship races between 1923 and 1977. The first standalone European Grand Prix was introduced in 1983 to fill a schedule slot left open by the withdrawal of an event at Flushing Meadows, New York, which was cancelled three months before its scheduled date. The European Grand Prix has been held at a number of circuits in several different countries, including Brands Hatch, the Nürburgring GP-Strecke and Valencia Street Circuit. The event was usually held in order to allow a second race in the same country, something which was not usually done except in the USA (where extra races were designated by state or city).
