Spearmen are the main anti-cavalry unit for the Egyptians early in the game. They are best against cavalry but can also be used against archers, siege weapons, and buildings since they have no specific weakness when attacking them. The spearman is weaker than the hoplite but stronger than the ulfsark. Attacks from heavy infantry and archers will most likely kill a spearman unit at full hitpoints as a result of their poor armor. They are best used in the first and second ages because of their cheapness and availability. By the third and fourth ages, it would be more effective to use war chariots against cavalry because of their higher attack, armor, hitpoints and fewer weaknesses from ranged attacks.
